What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that teaches a smaller person how to defend himself against a larger adversary by using leverage and proper technique.
Why is it important?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than just a sport and martial arts, it’s a life style. There are many reasons why practitioners claim it changes lives:
1. The physical benefits:
You will notice your body changing with every day or week. You will also notice great changes on your overall health as a result of training.
2. It builds confidence:
A lot of people are not confident with their abilities to protect themselves. Self-defense/BJJ classes will help you build confidence. If you are getting bullied, it’s a great way to help you learn to defend yourself and boost up your confidence.
3. Metal benefits:
There are many physical benefits that practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will bring you, but we must not overlook the process of learning a new technique. It requires as much mental activity as it does physical. Practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be a very powerful form of therapy and stress relief. It is challenging and requires a lot of focus.
There is also the struggle of learning, drilling and rolling. Walking into a class and being crushed by other practitioners after months of training can be frustrating, but coming back the next day and trying it again is the attitude of a champion. Do not quit! The mental strength you will learn in Jiu-Jitsu to keep pushing will be very beneficial in all other areas of your life. Remember “A black belt is a white belt who never quit”.
4. It improves your street awareness:
Practicing Jiu-Jitsu will make you more alert and aware of your surroundings. You are never planning to be attacked because your attacker is the one with the plan. Drilling and repeating the moves as well as simulating a situation will help you be aware and ready at all times. The moves will eventually become second nature to you.
A student said to his master: “You teach me fighting, but you talk about peace. How do you reconcile
The master replied: “It is better to be a warrior in a garden than to be a gardener in a war.” – unknown
5. It will help you develop self-discipline:
In order to learn and grow with your self-defense abilities, you have to develop self-discipline. In order for you to become better and see progress you have to keep practicing. Pushing yourself and being constant develops discipline. Like in any other subject, you can’t get better if you don’t practice.
Where Do I Start?
Master Marcus Aurelio recommends everyone to start with his cycle of 33 self-defense private lessons curriculum. This program is taught under the premise that the learner has no previous experience, but the techniques will also compliment the experienced martial artist. After this program, the student will be ready to move on to the next level.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu consists of thousands of different moves and techniques, but only a hand full of these techniques are necessary to achieve victory in most street fights.
